I find doing the free step works quite well if you treat it sort of like the running; it at least has some motion to it back and forth, whereas with the running, I find it really unnatural to move like that. So you just step on and off a lot faster than it tells you. You can work out a rhythm that counts all your steps still; I can do about 4000 an hour on it now, usually. If you're good with the running, go for that, but I think this'd be worth a try, too.
